The value of domain names - the arts

Category: Enrichment - Remy @

To be frank, I sometimes wonder if I might not bring my series of articles on the valuation criteria of domain names in the tomb before they have even completed. Some readers were puzzled by my choice not to a single synthetic article on the issue to "strike a blow." A major blow in what? In the vacuum, in my humble opinion. For there is no question here of making his mark an ecosystem already well supplied with sites and reference articles.

He comes to make a modest stone building built by enthusiasts and review criteria established - known or less known to specialists as beginners - and go into enough detail so as not to piss in a violin (pardon the expression but I have not found better). Because they swarm and multiply on the canvas, the charlatans of the recovery of domain names tend to serve the stick (which is already) to novices or even some insiders to beat those who were able to detect and believe in the value one of the sources of life on Internet domain name.

I'm rambling. On the menu today, domain names and fireworks. Kesako? Not necessarily easy to define, unless one starts from the premise (which we all should hear) that names the most valued are those that consist of one or more descriptive terms. My definition is this: the arts are all the characters or combinations of characters likely to decorate a generic term. By extension, they can even decorate an artificial term itself (eg iGoogle)

The list is long and endless and, partly thanks to these devices there is an infinite number of combinations possible for domain names. Some examples to get a clearer picture:

- I - formation.fr
- E fleurs.com
- Stock online. Org
- Car 24. Biz
- Super cartes.net
- 123 - encheres.ch
- My appartement.be

So why the fireworks? Whether by necessity or by choice. By necessity because it has arrived a moment (virtual) where most of generic domain names premium being taken, he had to think of something else. Some were immediately plunged into the all-artificial (Yahoo), others clung to the branches of the credit. And still cling. Two examples from among the behemoths of the Internet: Ebay ( "ElectroBaie") and MySpace ( "MonEspace)

And the brands making them, the visionaries have said there was probably a niche to exploit by detecting before others brandabilité certain combinations.

Mode effects are certainly no strangers to the development of the phenomenon: there was the era of "xxx24" (DomainDiscount24), the madness of "xxxonline (CadresOnline), the frenzy of" e / ixxx (Ebay, iFrance ), the race "123xxx" (123pneus), the rush to "superxxx (SuperToinette) and so on.

A few examples on the fly and I'll let you continue the list as you please in the comments:

- C - delabombe (baby). Com
- Kel con.com
- Planet domaines.org
- Allo kiné.biz

So the question: good or not good? Enhancing or demeaning? I may be obtuse, but I do not see how such devices can add value to a generic domain name. A touch of originality, at best. An opportunity to sit back in the wheels of fashion? If yes, can capitalize on the attractiveness of such domain names for a user is he's predictive domaining?

I almost put the dash in the bag of tricks but I think he deserved a dedicated ticket! And also the sea serpent "kékémieux? with or without hyphens? "is largely fueled by the problems of optimization, I call for my next article in this series on the recovery domain name" I plan to publish a face-to-face (friendly, serious and constructive) one or followers of no dashes (which can be found a priori in the circle of domainers) and one or more fans of indent (a priori SEO specialists). But if there are domainers who swear by the dash or webmasters to whom he gives the buttons ... and even webmaineurs undecided, even better!

To win: very little indeed (sorry ...), except for a little promotion and a chance for readers to share your knowledge and your perspective.

You know where to find me so do not hesitate!

When y'en more, still y'en:
